Non instantaneous mixing: Deuterium burning in very low mass stars and brown dwarfs

چکیده

We present results from detailed computations focused on chemical mixing in convective regions of very low mass stars (VLMs) and brown dwarfs (BDs) during deuterium burning. Computations are made both in the instantaneous and in the coupled–diffusive mixing schemes to check which mixing is required to treat these phases. The convective timescale is much shorter than the nuclear time scales for the burning of the deuterium present in the forming cloud during the pre–MS phase, and instantaneous mixing is a satisfactory approximation. This is confirmed by explicit model computation. During the following MS phase, the two mixing schemes lead to different D–profiles along the structure; differences in terms of total stellar luminosity remain however negligible. We conclude that, so far as we are dealing with VLMs and BDs evolutionary models, the treatment of chemical mixing does not influence either the pre-MS initial D-burning phase nor the hydrogen burning minimum mass and luminosity of the MS.

Pre-Main Sequence models for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs

We present evolutionary models for low mass stars and brown dwarfs (m ≤ 1.2M⊙) based on recent improvement of the theory: equation of state, atmosphere models, ... We concentrate on early evolutionary phases from the initial deuterium burning phase to the zero-age Main Sequence. Evolutionary models for young brown dwarfs are also presented. We discuss the uncertainties of the present models. We...

A Search for Pulsation in Very Low-mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs

Brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars constitute a crucial link between the intertwined processes of star formation and planet formation. To date, however, observational methods to uncover their formation mechanism or determine important properties such as mass and age have been lacking. Pulsation powered by deuterium burning in brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars is a newly suggested phenomeno...

Activity at the Deuterium-burning Mass Limit in Orion

We report very intense and variable Hα emission (pseudo-equivalent widths of∼ 180, 410 Å) of S Ori 55, a probable free-floating, M9-type substellar member of the young σ Orionis open star cluster. After comparison with state-of-the-art evolutionary models, we infer that S Ori 55 is near or below the cluster deuterium-burning mass borderline, which separates brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objec...

Pulsation Powered by Deuterium Burning in Brown Dwarfs and Very-Low-Mass Stars

Pulsation powered by deuterium burning in brown dwarfs and very low mass stars has been put forth (Palla & Baraffe 2005) as a novel probe of the interiors of these objects in the 1-15 Myr age range. Previous observations have hinted at variability on the expected timescales of a few hours, suggesting but not confinning that the phenomenon is at work in young brown dwarfs. We have recently carri...

Deuterium-burning in substellar objects

We consider the depletion of primordial deuterium in the interior of substellar objects as a function of mass, age and absolute magnitude in several photometric passbands. We characterize potential spectroscopic signatures of deuterium in the lines of deuterated water HDO. These results will serve as a useful, independent diagnostic to characterize the mass and/or the age of young substellar ob...
